When a player is retired, and in some grand cases up for Hall of Fame consideration, researchers will cite his All-Star visits. This isn't to say the American League and National League rosters are perfect. Bryant wasn't the only Cub to just miss a starting spot, as Zimmerman held off Anthony Rizzo in a tight race for starting NL first baseman. The last roster spot for each league will be determined by a final vote by the fans, and the managers will choose the starting pitchers for the game. As for the NL, Harper jumps out as a household name who led the league in voting. His Nationals are running away with the NL East, and teammates Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy will join him in the starting lineup. The full National and American League rosters were announced Sunday during ESPN's All-Star Selection Show.


That practice came into play after the 2002 All-Star Game ended in a tie when both teams ran out of pitchers. The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 11 and will be played at Marlins Park in Miami. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels is second in the American League All-Star voting among outfielders, but he will not be able to play because of a thumb ligament injury. That embarrassment pushed then-commissioner Bud Selig to give the All-Star Game added importance by giving the winning league homefield advantage in the World Series. That policy was met by criticism and ridicule, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has put an end to it.
