After this weekend's arbitration hearing between the Yankees and Betances, Levine got what he wanted, but it seems that wasn't enough. "However, we are not going to be bullied by the Yankees' team president. Dellin Betances and the Yankees have argued the year's final salary arbitration case, the first for the team in nearly a decade. Naturally, Betances' agent, Jim Murray, isn't surprised Levine feels the way he does, but Murray wasn't pleased that those feelings became public.

The public response since has been swift and unanimous in a way that tells you that Levine really messed up. Otherwise, you at least have to hope Betances's time in New York outlasts that of Levine's heading forward. Levine was out of line to go after Betances the way he did -- particularly after the Yankees won the arbitration hearing -- and there's no justification for what he said. And it's especially ridiculous that Levine would demonstrate a seemingly willful misunderstanding of bullpen value and compensation in order to scorn that player.

(NEW YORK) — The New York Yankees and star relief pitcher Dellin Betances engaged in a verbal battle over an arbitration hearing. The $5 million request from Jim Murray, Betances' agent, upset team president Randy Levine. ESPN reports Betances will instead get the highest amount for a first-year arbitration eligible setup man in baseball history. An arbitrator decided in the Yankees' favor, awarding Betances three million dollars for 2017 instead of the five million he sought. Levine went on to publicly criticize Murray during a conference call, saying the agent valued Betances as an elite closer instead of a top-tier setup man.
